A very rough guide to running BaseX on Openshift

I hope to release an Openshift quick start cartridge for BaseX soon. Until then here are some quick notes that completely ignore the right way to do this.

1. Use putty to access your gear: https://www.openshift.com/blogs/access-your-application-gear-using-ssh-with-putty

2. Install BaseX

cd app-root/data
wget http://files.basex.org/releases/BaseX-latest.zip
unzip *.zip

3. In jetty.xml change the host and port settings to use Env values

4. If the default server, (ruby?) is running kill it.

5. Start the BaseX httpserver

Schematron resources

At the beginning of the week I needed to create a Schematron sample in a hurry. I had done it before, a long time ago, on another machine. It did not help that http://www.schematron.com was, and still is, down. This article is a record of the resources I found at the time and later.

First https://code.google.com/p/schematron/ seems to be the place to get an implementation of ISO Schematron. This comes as a set of XSLT files. The wiki suggests a number of options for running these, which led me to the excellent tutorial at http://www.dpawson.co.uk/schematron/.

 In a hurry and not wanting to set up a batch file  I remembered that Kernow has a Schematron option. Sadly I could not find any documentation for this and the Web start option seems to have become a victim of enhanced security policies.

XML Database Schematron support

• eXistDb :uses Jing, which does not support the ISO version.
• BaseX there are a couple of embedded uses in github projects.
• Zorba nothing yet.
• MarkLogic has  ML-Schematron.

 Other tools

• XProc has validate-with-schematron.
• quixschematron has streaming support.
• http://code.google.com/p/phloc-schematron/ Apache Licence
• http://www.probatron.org/ is another implementation with Java and .Net support.

It seems to me it would be nice to have a  http://expath.org/ module that wrapped up the Schematron functionality and made it easy to install. Something like ML-Schematron that could run in BaseX or ExistDb.

Ralink RT5370 chip

To find chipset: lsusb -v

Devices with RT5370 chipset do not work out of the box in Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04. They work automatically in Ubuntu 12.10.
